The Story of Alabaster

From ancient stone to modern luxury lighting

Long before modern glass and contemporary design, alabaster was prized for one rare property: it looks like stone, yet it carries light. When cut into thin sheets, alabaster becomes naturally translucent, which is why it was historically used for small windows—especially in Byzantine and later medieval churches, notably in Italy.

In antiquity, alabaster was widely used for ornamental objects and relief work because it could be shaped with precision and finished beautifully—making it a material associated with craftsmanship, refinement, and luxury across centuries.

What Is Alabaster (Scientifically)?

A natural translucent stone with two main types

In material terms, the name “alabaster” commonly refers to two different minerals, and both appear in decorative and architectural contexts:

  • Gypsum alabaster — a soft sulfate mineral (gypsum is calcium sulfate dihydrate, CaSO₄·2H₂O).
  • Calcite alabaster — a fine-grained variety of calcite (calcium carbonate, CaCO₃).

A key practical difference is hardness (scratch resistance): gypsum is around Mohs 2, while calcite is around Mohs 3.

Why Alabaster Is Perfect for Lighting

Natural diffusion, warm glow, and premium ambience

Because alabaster is translucent, it performs like a naturally beautiful diffuser. Instead of a harsh beam, light is softened and scattered through the stone, creating a calm, warm glow and elegant ambient illumination—ideal for interior and architectural lighting.

Even when the light is off, the stone reads as premium: white tones, organic veins, and a refined surface texture that elevates décor with a sculptural feel.

Bespoke Craft, Designer Results

Luxury fixtures shaped around the stone

We treat alabaster as the heart of the design—not a decoration. Each piece is developed as bespoke, custom, designer lighting:

  • Careful stone selection (pattern, veins, translucency)
  • Precision shaping and thickness control for balanced illumination
  • Clean integration of modern LED for warm, consistent light
  • Hand-finishing that preserves the natural character of the stone

The result is luxury, premium, architectural fixtures that feel timeless and modern at once—crafted for high-end projects across Dubai, UAE.
